whatcha watching? fall '05

as far as movies go, the last thing i saw in the theater was Corpse Bride, the new Tim Burton stop-motion animated movie (a la Nightmare Before Christmas). i'd been looking forward to that for a long time since Nightmare is a big favorite in our family, but i actually found it pretty disappointing. even the songs were underwhelming - and i know i'll provoke erz_scamp's fierce Danny Elfman loyalties by saying that ;) but i have to say it anyway.

we're likewise looking forward to the new Wallace & Gromit movie, which opens this week. this has been a good fall for movies ds (who is 9) ought to be able to tolerate or even actually enjoy.

what have y'all been watching? (doesn't have to be movies, could be tv, dvds, live performances, or anything else.)

I can't wait for "Rent" to

I can't wait for "Rent" to come out!!

As for tv, I was really eager for Gilmore Girls, but so far this season have been terribly disappointed. Something has really changed on that show. I also like Medium... she's such a cool mom, she's not all skinny like the other primetime tv women, and sometimes the show is creepy, which I love.

speaking of the gilmore girls...

I've always had issues, a bit, with that show, - which over time I've come to peace with.

I saw this other new tv show "surface" I think. just one episode.

swoon! a youngish single mama character who finally rocks! She's a marine biologist. she takes the kid to the ex to make a big dive, but later - she's on a mission its all weirdo life forms and government cover-up.... she takes the boy - through the swamps, secretly, cuts up a fish.

that night she apologizes to him "I probally shouldn't have brought you out here"

"it was the best night of my life , mom" he says

Heartwarming.

totally shows the balance of motherhood and carear and work and desire and a fully developed kick ass woman character with doubts too.

i said to myself, that I wanted to watch it more, but I missed it. its typical tv. but its nice to see this character for me

Mirrormask

which was amazing to see on the big screen. I forgot how much i like fantastic landscapes and Magritte-esque imagery. And to see it so huge was great!

I was disappointed with a bit of the plot, but that's just me. Wont' say more so as not to spoil it for anyone.

I thought Corpse Bride was

I thought Corpse Bride was really nifty, but I don't go to movies often (maybe one every couple years -- I find movie theaters uncomfortably overwhelming). Last night we watched Vincent Price's The Pit & the Pendulum. Highly amusing. The Husband & I spent the rest of the evening wandering around & giggling pretending to be the not-so-dead wife...

I saw "Corpse Bride" too

and was disappointed, although I did love the colors on the big screen.

Saw Wong Kar-Wai's "2046" in the theater too. We got there fifteen minutes late and I feel as if we missed a *big* part of the plot in those first 15 minutes. I didn't like it as much as some of his earlier stuff ("Chungking Express" and "Fallen Angels"), but some of the cinematography (is that the right word?) is stunning, especially on a huge screen.

Hoping to see Neil Gaiman's "Mirrormask" this weekend. Hope it's worth the ten and change.

i'd like to see MirrorMask

i'd like to see MirrorMask too - that's getting some pretty mixed reviews but i love neil gaiman. dave mckean's pretty nifty too.
