New Mama

Hi - I have been reading this site for a few weeks and it seems like what I need. I have been posting short pieces on hipmama for a few months but I am looking for a place to get a different kind of feedback - perhaps this will be it. I am a SAHM and my dd will be 3 in April. I am working on my MA in education and I teach science very part time, in a one room school house. I have all of these things banging around in my brain, begging to be put to paper. But my skin can be so thin. I need to get over myself and just write. My goal is to submit one piece a week - something, anything to somewhere, anywhere. That's the phonic. And the rest of my life is the mama. It sure is great to see other women in the same way!

oh, well, okay. um...

it's an elementary school, traditionaly used by politically active african-american families in our area. it's k-6 with an enrollment of 15 right now. it's run by one woman and a few part time people like me. i teach science one day a week and i think they have someone come in for chorus and also reading. the woman who runs it is everything you might want for your child. she tells you exactly like it is AND she is compassionate and encouraging and supportive. the kids think she is the goddess incarnate and they may be right. she never asks for lesson plans or any other bs. she never second guesses me or hovers. she always brings me supply catalogues and conference papers. she is also a trampoline-ist and takes all of her students to circus camp over the summer. and the last time i walked in, she was in the middle of a rant about the media. she was telling all of the these young children not to watch fox because the news it a bunch of lies. now where else do you find that happening? i wish someone would have told me that a long, long time ago. it's a drive across town for me but i love it.
maybe i could write about my students sometime...teaching is so much like mothering, only you get to go home. thanks for the interest!
