Don't ghettoize me, puuuhlleeeeeaze!

So, any movie mamas out there? I'm a graduate film student mama to one gorgeous nearly 9 month old daughter looking for adviceencouragementideassupportstories about how you're making it work. Not only that, but if you're making it work in the industry at-large. Don't get me wrong. I love being part of women's festivals, but I don't want my artmaking to be relegated to those places, and not seen by a wider audience.
...oh, and if you're curious, i don't have much up yet, 'side my blog, but you can take a peek at me at www.hannahdallman.com

Hi

I'm working on a screenplay with a friend, it's been a really neat experience. We both have so much going on with our various projects we won't get started on actual filming until late next year, maybe even 2008.

I checked out your site, nice work!

thanks for the link

thanks for the article! it looks good--i'll have to read it in-depth, when someone isn't trying to eat my knee (i think that means it's naptime!). my hubby is always trying to get me to watch star wars and i couldn't care less! :)

welcome!

I'm a visual artist- sculpture mostly- but I do some experimental video. Very nice website! Welcome!

THANKS!

thanks...i'm trying to get more 'portfolio-ey' stuff up soon...! (see my post below too)

hey mama, welcome! :)there

hey mama, welcome! :)

there haven't been too many film mamas here over the time that i've been here. are there any other mamas in your grad program?

i'm a lapsed theater mama and love film, although i've never done any. i felt much the same way you do about being ghettoized back when i used to do "women's" theater.

the stuff you have up on your page/blog is very cool. (and your daughter is indeed gorgeous!) hope to see you around here - there's a lot of general discussion about creativity even if there aren't too many here in your field. xoxo

HELLO Back atcha!

I hear ya, it's hard to feel like you can push to have a broader appeal and still be hip and relevant, and not talk about women's issues...I mean, we're half the population for goodness' sake. There aren't any other mamas in my program...at least that are still doing coursework. There are a couple that are wrapping their thesis films, but as far as taking classes and being a mama goes, I think I'm the first.

Twyla's been on set with me a couple of times, and that's been good. I think all the 20 something guys working the crew had NO idea where to look when I nursed though. I have to chuckle at that.

Thanks for checking the site too...I've been meaning to get more portfolio stuff up...right now it's mostly pics of my li'l gal and stuff...photos and more flicks are coming, promise!!

I DID have some good news from my dept today. I think I landed a p/t job for the fall semester, when I go back to classes, with the Doc Center at school and they'll let me bring Twyla along. I consider that a little victory!

I think the toughest thing to think about right now is actually breaking in to the industry. I can't do 16 hour days as a lowly PA, but I still have lofty ambitions...know what I mean?

Well, that was an all-over-the-place ranty reply, but thanks for posting!

congrats on the job - i

congrats on the job - i think finding a workplace where you can have your kiddo with you is a pretty *big* victory!
