let's talk promotion for Mamaphiles 3 - sending out copies for review, PR, local distribution, etc.

so let's brainstorm how we want to promote this puppy this time 'round...

for #1, we sent out what seemed like an awful lot of review copies. we did get reviewed at a handful of places but decided to scale way back for #2. here are some blurbs from the reviews from the first issues:
http://www.mamaphiles.com/reviews.html

we had some attempts at writing press releases but i'm not sure they ever got sent anywhere.

both times i've had fantasies of putting together a semi-polished "press packet" that we would send out with review copies, at least to the more traditional venues like Mothering. but in reality, not sure i will have the time/energy to get it together.

anyone who wants to take a stab at writing a press release, please go ahead!

i will make up a quick'n'dirty list of a small handful of places that we've had success in getting reviewed in the past. my knowledge runs more toward the zine world and less toward the parenting world, so please pass along/post info y'all may have on places to send copies that might give us some press.

also, a couple of people have offered to approach local stores to see if they would carry Mamaphiles, which is a great idea. this could be at places that regularly carry zines and/or places where parents tend to shop. we will work out logistics of getting either physical (hard copy) masters or electronic .pdf files to any & all who want to sell copies locally.

one thing we haven't really done before is send out review copies to people we think are "influential" parenting bloggers. ??? no idea if that's a good idea but it's an idea anyway!

the way i see it, the more parents who come across it, the better. it's up to us to be creative in how people find out about it.

I can't find the Money for

I can't find the Money for Mamaphiles post I seem to remember. I want to make sure I do this right. Since I feel I got more copies than my donation really entitled me to, I should send some more cash to Corbin, correct/ Want to make sure I am sending it to the right person. Thanks.

Connie?

the person who zeroxed the copys is hippypunkanarchapregnantcutesexysmartmama ...ok...:) you know connie. I don't know if she wants the money, if she could use it, to make more and send it. Connie?

I could use a donation for sending things out to reviewers, if no one wants your money. muffy didn't send me the check for sending it to those reviewers, and I need to make more mastercopies.

Connie? want to zerox a batch and send back mastercopys? before you have your baby. I'm not saying that to be sarcastic or pushy ....just that before you get really caught up this might be a good time to do a batch

muffy send me a list of

muffy send me a list of adresses - from a writer mama group she belongs to - that she thought would be great to send them out to review too. Its like 14 names. I said she should send them, and she wanted to have copies to send them out, and I said "send me a check and I will make copies and sent them"

So its muffys sponsor on that! I don't know alot of who these people are but thought I would update everyone, that I will do this, in a week - when I get the check and am back from a mini trip I'm taking.

ALSO - is anyone going to be in charge of promotions or is this just a grab bag collective of "ok, everyone do a little something"? Because if you want, if you send me adresses with names, and 4 dollars for each issue you want to go out - I would add that to this effort I'm doing next week.I don't want to put anymore of my own money into mamaphiles as I spend like $250 so far getting issues for new orleans and to have on hand to fill orders (and postage, using kinkos computer for a short bit, ect. ect.). I know its hard to believe! but it really does cost 3 dollars and a bit to zerox. its STOOPID. of course I sold some and took that money and will re-imburse myself when orders come in, (or save money in can to make another batch and let it substain itself like that) I'm ok with the money I put into it. but just saying I don't want to put anymore money now. I would not bring up costs, it feels tacky, but just wanted it all to be transparent. that I am not taking anyones money or something, unjustly.

Those are all great places

Those are all great places to send the information!

But like I said, I really don't think we should send out ANYTHING publicity-wise until the website is updated. Otherwise folks are going to see that it says "ordering information coming soon" and likely as not never check back.

2007 Zine Yearbook!

Zine Yearbook
c/o Microcosm
222 S Rogers St.
Bloomington, IN 47404

Deadline is December 31, 2007

how about a list of the

how about a list of the usual zine review spots that we have sent to before, I guess like MRR, broken pencil, a list to send out for reviews. did you have one from before tenderfoot?

and everyone please feel free to just "do it" and move this anyway you can to anyone you can think of

Atomic Books is siked to be having them, so sorry to repeat myself, (I think?) but I will handle getting it to Atomic and Microcosm . . .

maybe we should make a group email to go out to contributors - to remind them to help get our baby out now, review on their blog, put in local bookstores, if they would like a mastercopy, ect.

Miranda, can we use that

Miranda, can we use that blurb all around or is it LM only? Thanks!

Oh sure, use it however. I

Oh sure, use it however. I just added a little to what was on the website already.

I'm hesitant to send it to the LM blog yet, China. I know you're ready to take orders, but the website says "Ordering information coming soon." Won't people be confused about how to get ahold of it?

Can the website be updated to show that orders can be placed now?

Miranda: a zine about motherhood and other adventures

i will get the website

i will get the website changed, there was just some confusion about whether we were ready or not because of the broken copier & so forth.

i said this on the other

i said this on the other thread (um that is kinda confusing, two threads)

but just to make this easier, I'll say it here too -

mamaphiles is the same price, same adress ..

$4

shoot, I don't have a copy here so I can't give you a page count. I remember it was technically 4 pages longer than the last one, but my numbering system got a little off, I didn't number some pages with photographs, so I can't say for sure

What about mamazine.com?

What about mamazine.com? Are any of our contributors columnists on that site?

try everything!

corbin, its great you have a mothering connection - mothering has never reviewed us before although we sent stuff to them.

sure, why not influential bloggers? they can download the pdf :)

I'll do local stores in baltimore: atomic, red emmas, and normals - which is the best used bookstore in the entire world.

it would be good to have a simple press release .... but we'll see.

trp also blogs on on gnn.

trp also blogs on on gnn. we can get something up there too.

I'll find out who at

I'll find out who at Literary Mama it should be sent to. Brain Child has pretty conclusively indicated (by their silence!) that they are not interested in reviewing zines. I second the mama blogs. I just don't know of many, myself.

Esperanza if she still loves us
Whiskeysour's blog Baldo
Rebeldad, maybe?

I really only know the ones vaguely connected to here and my other friends, none that are, like Famous...and who would like it...

What about other sites, like The Motherhood Movement Online? Is anyone involved with MotherTalk? I think our old Andrea is a main person there, but I don't know her...

i'll do a write up on my

i'll do a write up on my blog and make some copies for mothersville to sell www.mothersville.com

Literary Mama may or may not

Literary Mama may or may not review it (unclear at this point); however, they *will* post a blurb on the LM blog about it. How does this sound? Anything to add?

The Mother of all Zines is Back!
Mamaphiles, the mama-zine compilation, announces the publication of its third issue. In this installment, twenty five zine-writing mamas (and one papa) take on the theme "Coming Home." Contributors range from zine veterans like Ariel Gore of Hip Mama to young mothers brand-new to zines. Packed with essays, poetry, artwork and photos, Mamaphiles is a comprehensive introduction to the vibrant mama zine community (or a good way to check in with old favorites). Ordering information at www.mamaphiles.com

the red pill will definitely

the red pill will definitely do a review altho we don't have quite the audience or circulation of something like mothering, but it will get out there and we do have readers that are parents.

Mothering, Seattle bookstores, and ...

Hey all. Who did you send it to at Mothering before? Candace Walsch? I have been in recent communication with her about a few articles, so I'd be happy to send mamaphiles to her with a cover letter, unless there is someone else who wants to (or soemone else at Mothering to send it to) Maybe Kate could talk to someone at BrainChild or have Literarymama do a review? don't know many other parenting mags, but I'd be happy to solicit any if people want to send me the names and contact person.
I'll also try selling it to Powells, Third Palce Books, Bootyland, Eliiot Bay Books, and a few other places that I sall my zine to. So I'd love as many hard copies as Connie is willing to mail me or send me the PDF and I'll copy htem myself. I'm so excited to see it!

great! i think bootyland has

great!

i think bootyland has carried us before...

i'm not sure who we sent to at Mothering before - does anyone remember? it may have been candace. i'll ask her.
