sustainability and art

Hi Gals,

Question-

How do you define sustainability?
Also, does sustainability relate to art and artmaking and if so, how?

If anyone has any ideas to contribute I would so appreciate it. I am working on developing the art curriculum for a charter school and this is something that I'm trying to sort through in my head. Thanks!

sustainability is art

Absolutely! Because to me, sustainability to a great extent is innovation. Innovation by definition is the process of making changes, using something that exists in one form and applying it to create something else that serves a certain function or purpose, whether you define the purpose as "practical" or "aesthetically pleasing" does not matter, because the art exists in the act of an individual taking a material and incorporating it into something else. Whether it be collecting old windows and building your own greenhouse, gathering fallen branches and creating a window shadow box or building a funky headboard for your bed, making old bicycle rims into pot racks, reusing leaves to make a compost or drying flowers to frame and put on your wall, all applies to the relationship between sustainability and art.
so, tht's my 2cents. good luck with your project, i hope it inspires many to embrace their own creativity and apply it to social awareness and change!

thanks for the input! I like

thanks for the input! I like the idea of sustainability as innovation. As an artist I sometimes wonder if my sculptures (or paintings or whatever) are just more junk on the planet. Maybe just the act of creation is like you say, a process of making changes.
