My Target Market goals

By 2009, I want to have placed stories with HipMama. LiteraryMama, Brain,Child and the Mother's Movement Online. Damn it. And more places, too. Damn it. I'm serious.

Of course, I felt my Bus Brats story was the best fit I'd ever written for LM and they rejected it. Looking forward at ideas that I have for pieces to write, I really can't imagine any that would be a better fit. Except my poetry. I may have to target them for poetry. I'm not sure the other things I write would suit. We'll see. Now I need mamas to tell me that I can do this and to check in on my progress and hassle me, please!

have you seen this market?

I think the stuff I write is too subculture and/or radically left of center (or just weird) to be a good fit, but you might be able to slip some subversive content in with your "irreverent, realistic look at motherhood."

Sometimes paper is the only thing that will listen to you.

I thought I posted about

I thought I posted about Motherwords here, but maybe not. I have a piece in the current issue. It looks to be the only other Brain,Child-ish print mag out there - definitely try them. And tell us about your book proposal! (If you want.)

I was just looking at their website and couldn't tell if it was an actual print magazine or online only? Is it worth it? I am suffering from serious magazine overload (must be killing 10 trees a year) and am trying to limit myslef.

Yes, Motherwords is an actual print magazine. (I have a copy right here.) In looks it's a little less...hm, I don't know if "edgy" is the right word, than Brain, Child. A bit more glossy. But in terms of content, there's a real diversity of voices, excellent, honest writing, including a kick-butt piece by Raye Tibbits called "Attachment Parenting Rebel" and cartoons by Hausfrau. I'm pretty excited about it.

Thanks for cracking the whip(:

Thanks for the Motherwords tips. I think you did mention Motherwords before, Miranda. When I looked, I wasn't sure if it really was print - now, I will definitely try it.

Guess what? One goal checked off - I got a yes back from the MMO! Yay!

The proposal is my Siblings At Birth thing, expanding from the former article. I soon will be hounding everyone for stories(:

checking in...

How's it going?

No news except a rejection

No news except a rejection on the Cinderella story - but it came really fast and with a personal (if not sweet) note, so Fantasy and Science Fiction Mag looks like a good possibility.

so where will you send it to now?

Sometimes paper is the only thing that will listen to you.

I'm not sure. I keep wishing that old MZB fantasy mag still existed. I need a cross between a fantasy mag and a women's literary journal.

Sent Hurting Cinderella to a fantasy/sci-fi magazine.

oooh, what's Hurting Cinderella?

I didn't know you wrote fantasy/sci fi. Keep me posted about that and, since Octavia Butler has turned me onto sci-fi/fantasy, let me know where I can read your story!

Thank you! It's still up under fiction here, since there aren't many posts there, even though I wrote it awhile back. And did you read my Queen Bee story under fiction?

It actually looks a little messed up now that I check it - I guess the site had some updates in 3 years!

Thank you! That's exactly what I need. I sent BB off to HipMama today, so we'll see. Please keep hassling me!

Has anyone else submitted

Has anyone else submitted anything to the new HipMama? Any word?

i just did...

inspired by 3 days of being around awesome media makers with my kind of (political) stripes and 3 days of seeing how happy dd was in the Allied Media Conference's Kids' Track, I asked kerlin if she had space for a short write-up. And she did (if I sent it in that same day).

Soooooo....

thanks to china, who was my non-stop cheerleader/editor, I sat down at 1 pm and by 10:30 that night (I had to go home and get the list of concrete ways to support mothers, children and families that we had drafted at the conference), I had a finished piece to send!

Hope I'm not giving away any secrets, but she said she was finishing the issue this week. Not quite sure what that means in terms of print media (this is why I love zines. 'cuz *I* control when the damn thing comes out. Well, as long as the xerox machine doesn't malfunction), but I'm assuming it means it will be out soon.

Congrats!!! Way to make a deadline!

In that case, I am thinking Bus Brats probably didn't make the cut, because I never did hear back. I'll wait a little more to see, though, before I start scouring about for another market for it. The one I posted today in non-fiction, I am hoping to submit to The MMO, which I've not tried yet. I think I still need to flesh out the end more, though. I also sent Boys To Men to Motherverse and haven't heard from them yet. I'm trying to keep up with those goals!

did you try dropping a follow-up e-mail?

never having worked with Kerlin before, I'm not sure how she works. But you could try dropping her an e-mail and asking.

Also, if you want to try your hand at shorter pieces, you could try make/shift's Everyday Actions (scenes of feminist action in everyday life (200 to 400 words))section: http://www.makeshiftmag.com/submissions.htm
