Selling Your Zine To The Public: Ideas

I thought it would be cool to discuss how we sell our zines. I'm amping my sales goals for August and really could use some fresh outlook on this. I'm thinking door-to-dooor, riding the train and pitching it to folks, and direct mail. What do you do, how do you sell your zine?

selling zines

trula
I mostly have bookstores do it for me. I propositioned (I really wanted to use another word there, but as always my brain is dead and nothing came to mind, oh well...) several independent bookstores and they sell them for me for a 60/40 split. I also sell them to consignment stores for the same arrangement and some "kid" stores as a novelty item by the cash register. Good luck

how many do you sell a month?

If that's not too nosy a question? I'm not averse to doing consignment, other bookstores, etc. it's just in my experience I don't sell very much that way. I do better face-to-face. Have you ever gone door to door with your zine?

I use several bookstores

I use several bookstores here in town and two out-of-town (Quimby's and Atomic Books). Like realitymom, I also have zines at consignment stores (all kid-oriented) as well as some fancy/crunchy kid-gear places. I make sure to always have my website mentioned in my bio for essays I publish, and that's gotten some orders, too.
