What's your baby listening to?

When I posted this on the old forums, my baby was really a baby, now he's almost three and his varying tastes in sound still fascinate. We're not listening to music these days, sadly. So E really digs music from kiddie shows (BArney, Blue, Sagwa) or commericals. E loves hip hop sound bytes best. He digs the drums. And he likes loud guitars. Probably because mom and dad play. (Sigh) What a sad commentary from a musician mom...my boy's listening to commercials...

learning the meaning of war through music

I was playing Ricanstruction's cover of Bob Marley's "War" (a cover that I like much better than the original) and dd, who was eating a grilled soy cheese, asked, "What's war?"

"Well, war is when two countries fight each other. Lots of people get killed. Sometimes kids get killed. Sometimes kids' mamas get killed." I then asked if she remembered the big marches we went on last year to protest the war and to protest people being killed in a far-away country called Iraq.

She did.

"Do you think war is a good thing?"

"No." she said.

later, she started head banging to the guitar riffs.

Besides "grown-up" stuff...?

The kids music that they like and I like, too is anything by Ralph Covert, They Might Be Giants, most Dan Zanes we all like, Laurie Berkner isn't too vomit-inducing. Felonious has an album called "Busta Nursery Rhyme" that's kids hip hop, not bad.
They also like songs from Mary Poppins and Cinderella.
As far as "grown-up" music they like Yellowman, Toots and the Maytals, the Police, the Manhattan Transfer, the Beatles, Louis Prima....

Do you have bed, bed, bed? I

Do you have bed, bed, bed? I just ordered it. My kids love TMBG and Kimya Dawson sings on that one too.

Nope.

But now I have something else to add to my list of things to look for at the library today!

hip hop baby

My little dude loves outkast. A lot. Any outkast song that comes on the radio he instantly starts doing his little bum sway dance to.
