Just getting started again...

Hello All,
I'd like to get in the habit of writing again. Does anyone have any suggestions for writing excercises I can do on my own to get my mental juices flowing again and me back into the habit of thinking and seeing the world as a writer? Its been a long time....Does this site have something like a group that we submit topics to and critique each others work?

hey there...

I try to do 300 words everyday, whether in the actual 300 words or just by writing an e-mail or a letter to a friend. It gets me in the habit of writing every day and, for me, it allows me to record all the small details of the day (whether it be the day itself or a day long ago that I am suddenly remembering), which is good in case I need to dredge up these things later.

For prompts, I usually use the calls for submission to get me writing about something. It helps a lot because I then have a goal--if I can get this written and into show-able shape, then I have a potential home to send it to. And I have a deadline and thus, a timeline so that I don't start something and let it sit forever and ever (I do have the tendency to do that with my work).

And, of course, feel free to post work for feedback. The essay you posted is disturbingly well-written (or written so well that it is disturbing). I'll post my feedback on it in a bit. I actually came across your intro while looking for an essay I posted way back when...

well, there isn't anything as

well, there isn't anything as formal as all that, at present - in terms of a group, i mean. but you can always post your writing in the appropriate forum (fiction, non-fiction, poetry) and ask for feedback.

and hey, this site is what we all want it to be! so please do feel free to post ideas you have, or topics or writing exercises or prompts that you feel might be fun to tackle as a group.

i have a couple of writing books that might have prompts in them, if people are interested in that kind of thing.

also, there is 300 words, which can be a great way to get back in the daily (or as often as you can) habit of writing. of course, that's easy for me to say since i don't post there...but maybe one of these days i'll get it together to start. ;) to get there, click "forums" at the top of the page, then on the "300 Words" forum near the bottom of "writing mama."
