From the techMama: Upgrade coming this weekend, things will look weird for a bit

Hey folks--

Lynn here, your hipMama family of websites techMama. I'm about to start the upgrade process for Mamaphonic. This means things will be wonky for a bit, "a bit" being possibly through Saturday, though I'm expecting less turbulence than that. I will let you know when is a good time to start submitting bug reports (hint: not yet :) ).

Why this needs to happen: The software running hipMama (Drupal) has gone through several updates since this site went live and we're woefully behind. Bee wants to add several new features and she can't until I update the underlying software. Things will work pretty much the way they do now, but things won't look exactly the same.

Anyway, bear with me, and cross your collective fingers since I'm doing this with Mercury retrograde. All good thoughts appreciated. :)

whoa...

i feel like i rolled with the punches pretty well when we made the switch to this software way back when, but for some reason this update is reeeeally throwing me off. i'm totally disoriented.

i can't see other folks' bios anymore. (is it just me?) if that's a setting that can be changed, i think it would be great to have it readable by others like it used to be. what's the point of having a bio if i can only read my own?!

i don't really get the buddy list thing either. it's just used to track people's posts? am i understanding that correctly?

i, too, was sad that all the old PMs disappeared.

i'm sorry - i do appreciate all of the work put into this site from the tech/admin side of things. i guess i'm just cranky. i'll get over it.

Bios: You should be able to see them.

Buddy list: As the site gets bigger, this allows you to track certain people's posts without digging through the recent posts.

PMs: Guys, I'm really sorry but somehow the PMs got nuked. Really really sorry. I try hard to avoid such happenings and this one got by me.

Missing content: I'll check into it.

Unless China and a few other users just don't have any.

Maybe there's a caching

Maybe there's a caching issue (a router or part of your computer along the way hangs on to an old copy a bit longer than usual, you can usually get around this with the refresh function, but sometimes it takes "clearing your cache" or dumping your cookies or something along those lines).

(And China appears to have no content in those fields, so maybe that's it -- lots of people don't, actually).

Isn't the personal information the bio part? Ohhhhhh. I see. Lynn -- all the personal info stuff is coming up as "The content of this field is private and only visible to yourself."

Is there some way we can get Biography & Interests opened up to public (or at least registered users) view? And everyone else -- do you want Name & State, province, or region opened up or is that too much? Assuming, of course, that we can open them up (I don't know that we can...).

i would still love to see these made viewable - if it's possible from the tech end.

I'd like them to be viewable too -- it's weird because the little box is checked by y'alls that says you can view profiles, but the only thing included in the profile appears to be the homepage url. Weird.

the private messages in individual mamas' inboxes?

I had a few that I was holding onto for sentimental/support reasons and was sad to find that they seem to be gonegonegone.

same with zine scene. i can see the 7 page links at the bottom of the page, but clicking on them leads to a blank page with just the headings.

i really, *really* hope that they aren't gone for good...

yeah, it must be a karmic thing

I think I get the urge to clear up communication during retrogrades, which is a good use for all the muddy energy. :) I just finished hipmama's upgrade, mostly, so tomorrow I'll be attacking Mamaphonic.
