Adventures in Mothering Across Cultures

(to be edited by Suzanne Kamata)

What happens when your child doesn’t speak your native language? Should you invite your German-American in-laws to your Diwali celebration? How can you raise a child with two cultures without fracturing his/her identity? In our increasingly global society, more and more mothers are facing questions such as these.

last call-My Baby Rides the Short Bus-the book

Call for submissions: My Baby Rides the Short Bus – an upcoming anthology to be published by PM Press (Winter, 2009)

We are seeking submissions from a diverse group of parents rising special needs kids who feel marginalized by their subculture status (economics, lifestyle, orientation, religion/atheism) and underrepresented in print.

Got tips on how to stay sane during the IEP process when you don’t believe in the system to begin with? Felt you had to hide you radical political books while the Early Intervention Folks come over? Found yourself stuck a mainstream world of special needs parenting that you don’t fit into?

the rise of zine culture

I would really like to know if anyone from Grand Haven High School has a zine, and would be up for an interview or two for the paper. If you know anyone with a zine or you have one, please contact me or reply: hxc_army_girl@hotmail.com

Thank you very much!!

i love beans!

hi, friends. i am writing a series of zines mainly geared towards people who live in community but which could apply to everyone. the first one, which is already done is called "when in doubt, visualize!" and is a general overview of cooking for community. it deals with how to make meals healthy, what to do with surplus of certain items such as bumper crops and dumpster scores, and how to take the needs of your community into account when planning meals.

Bad Mother Chronicles

Hello out there.... The next issue of my 'zine, Bad Mother Chronicles will come out August 1. It is The Spoiled Brat issue. I am seeking all sorts of contributions, but I'd love to hear stories about being an Adult Child of Overly Permissive Parents (anyone else born in 1970???), and the struggle or ease of parenting differently or similarly. Content can be sent directly to me...I think by replying to this message by July 1, if possible.

According to most of those pregnancy and birth and parenting guides lining the shelves of bookstores and libraries across the country, being middle class and heterosexually married and white is somehow inherent in being a mother. There’s the occasional island of difference like Ariel Gore’s Mother Trip or Rachel Pepper’s Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians, but they are so few and so far between, and none of them really focuses on class. So, that’s what we propose to do now – put together an anthology of work about pregnancy and birth and parenting that addresses how poverty shapes those experiences.

Film Submissions Requested

Altar Magazine is seeking film submissions for an all day girls' and women's film event in New York City at the Pioneer Theater this Spring. We seek to show films that highlight girls' and women's experiences and politics. The film must be directed or co-directed by a woman. We will consider productions in the follow categories: feature length (60 mins or longer), narrative, documentary, student films, and short films (59 mins or shorter).

How it Sold anthology - seeking submissions

Some of you heard this pitch from me last year and a few of you submitted. Then I got busy, switched agents, and didn't get the proposal out there. Now I'm ready to do that.

I hope those of you who haven't already will consider submitting now. Feel free to forward to other writers - male and female, fiction and non-fiction. If you belong to any e-mail lists or discussion boards for writers, I'd be very grateful if you would pass this message along.
